Around the Capitol

Written by Joe Gendron, LBA Director of Government Relations

This week we held our annual LBA Bankers Day at the State Capitol event. With more than 50 people in attendance, we appreciate the participation from the Louisiana bankers, bank directors, sponsors and public officials who attended.

During the event, State Superintendent of Education John White, Speaker of the House Taylor Barras, and State Sen. Page Cortez (R-Lafayette) addressed our group. Superintendent White discussed progress being made in our state’s elementary and secondary school education system and the challenges we continue to face. Speaker Barras focused on the much-discussed state budget process, while Sen. Cortez discussed the history of the state constitution and efforts being made for a state constitutional convention. These speakers provided bankers in attendance great information on a variety of topics. LBA staff also updated attendees on important bills and other legislative topics.

At the State Capitol, bankers were able to discuss important LBA-supported bills with lawmakers. The group visited the floor of the State House of Representatives where they were formally recognized by the body, and visited the area where Senate committees meet. Navigating the bustling state capitol can be daunting, but continuing to have strong banker attendance at Bankers Day is very important in maintaining strong relationships at the capitol and showing that Louisiana bankers are tuned in to what is happening in Baton Rouge.

We give thanks to all who made this event a success. We give a special thanks to our sponsors for this year’s event: Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and the law firm of Fenimore, Kay, Harrison and Ford.
